Product Tag and Group Filtering
Palo Alto provides an option to filter products by tag or by group. This article will show you how to set up product tags and groups as well as configure the two different collection page filter modes.
Option 1) Filter by product tags
Step 1: Open your products list
From your shop admin, navigate to your products section
Step 2: Select a product
Click on the product you want to add a tag to.
Step 3: Add or select an existing tag
Within the “Tags” section of the product detail page, you can select an existing tag or create a new tag.
Step 4: Save your changes
Click on the “save” button in order to update your product.
Step 5: Setting tags as your filter option
In your shop admin, navigate to Online Store --> Themes (Palo Alto) --> Customize --> Collection pages.
Click on the “collection pages” section.
Set the filter mode to “By tag” and specify where the filter should be rendered (either at the top or left of the product grid) and save your changes.
Option 2) Filter by product groups
Step 1: Identify the groups you want to use
In our example we will use “Brand” and “Price”.
Step 2: Export products
From your shop admin, navigate to your products section, and export your products in a CSV file ( Shopify guide on exporting products).
You can choose the products you want to export from the dialog box selections, which are:
- The current page of products
- All products
- Products you have selected
- Products that match your search and filters.
Step 3: Add the group names to tags
In the CSV file, add the group names to the tags based on the group you want them to be in.
The format should be: Group name_Tag name
For our example, we will use the tags “Nike” and “0$ to 15$” that we created.
So for our example, we will format the tags: Brand_Nike and Price_0$ to 15$
Step 4: Save your CSV file and import the products
Next, import the products back into your store (Shopify guide on importing products).
Ensure that you check "Overwrite existing products that have the same handle" when uploading the file to prevent the duplication of products.
Step 5: Setting Groups as your filter option
From your shop admin navigate to Online Store --> Themes (Palo Alto) --> Customize --> Collection Pages.
In the Collection pages section, set the filter mode to “By group” and specify where the filter should be rendered (either at the top or left of the product grid) and save your changes.
