How to use the built in page templtaes

In this documentation post, we'll take a look at setting up pages and using the built-in page templates that come with our theme.

Note: The steps described here will describe the use of LIQUID templates. They are more limited compared to JSON templates that were introduced with Online Store 2.0 so If you'd like to set up truly custom pages, our documentation post on JSON templates covers it all.

Finding the new templates.

You can find the new templates inside your theme editor by opening the top drop-down menu and selecting the Pages tab:

Here you will see all of the available Page templates in your store. You can fully customize these templates without the need to assign them or even publish your copy of the Palo Alto theme.

Adding Blocks.

You may notice that this step is called 'Adding Blocks' instead of 'Adding Sections'. This isn't by accident and it's actually an important distinction that needs to be made. The LIQUID templates have one or more sections and most of their functionality comes from the section blocks.

The ABOUT page template for example only has one section that has the option to add blocks to it. These blocks are hidden at first but you will see the option to add them in as soon as you click on the 'About page' section on the side:

Assigning the templates.

To assign a template to any of your pages you need to first publish your copy of the Palo Alto theme. If you've already done that, you can find the option to assign the template to a specific page by going into your Online Store > Pages and opening the page you're looking to edit:

Inside this editor, you'll need to scroll down to 'Theme template' and select the template you'd like to assign:

Once you're done, Save the changes and you're good to go!
